The DBA is for graduates in any field of knowledge with appropriate business and management experience who wish to pursue a doctoral degree while still actively engaged in their professions.

In Portugal there is no better place to come for your DBA than the BRU-IUL. As a school, we have been closely linked to the business world since our inception.  We actively support applied business research within a stimulating atmosphere. All of our faculty members have held senior business positions, and are highly skilled at linking business practice to real management issues and applied research.

This program started in 2006 and that the estimated time for completion is 4 years. Up to know several students have already graduated.

Advanced Topics in Business Administration I and II

These courses aim to add greater depth to the research topic by giving each DBA student a detailed overview of the frontiers of management. The courses are composed of specially-designed workshops and seminars that convey a solid understanding of state-of-art management and its implications to the field of business. At the end you will have a powerful analytical tool to manage and grow your organization in this world of breakneck change.

Research Methods in Business Administration

Qualitative Research Methods in Business Administration

These courses will provide you with the methodology and quantitative methods and tools you need to formulate and implement your research proposal.

Seminar/Project in Business Administration I

This seminar involves: Discussion of research papers, aimed at training your ability to review relevant literature; relevancy judgment and presentation skills; Presentation of the detailed dissertation project

Seminar/Project in Business Administration II

Discussion and evaluation of the progress report on your research.

Thesis in Business Administration

Year 3 and following - during this time you are developing and completing your dissertation. The normal time period for conclusion of the DBA is from 4 to 5 years, depending on the time each DBA candidate will be able to allot to his or her research project.

The DBA is for business graduates with appropriate business and management experience who wish to pursue a doctoral degree while still actively engaged in their professions. The fast-paced, dynamic business world of today calls for leaders with a constantly-evolving knowledge of the business environment and the know-how and flexibility to meet new and often daunting challenges.

The DBA gives you the ideal chance to reflect on critical management issues while carrying out in-depth research.  If you want to make a contribution to the ideas and practices with research that is interesting and innovative, our DBA is the programme you've been looking for.

BRU´S faculty has a long-standing tradition of linking research with the business world. In the DBA, the role of the supervisor is crucial to the development of the whole research process. Each candidate admitted to the programme will be assigned a supervisor with relevant business experience who has mastered the concept, scope and objectives of the DBA and who is sensitive to the needs and requirements of the part-time student (which is the case of most DBA students). Most importantly, your research advisor will have a particular interest in the research topic you have chosen.

After your project has been analyzed and the scope and aims of it have become more clearly defined, we often find that joint supervision is the more appropriate approach.  In this case we will add another faculty member to the supervisory team  in order to respond more effectively to specific issues and topics that the project may involve.

BRU-IUL faculty has an outstanding research track record.  Our faculty members have published regularly in top international research journals and are active players in advancing the field of finance.

Our full-time faculty includes PhDs from such diverse universities as HEC - Paris (France), Leuven (Belgium), Lausanne (Switzerland) Glasgow, London Business School, Lancaster, Reading and Warwick (UK), Columbia, Carnegie-Mellon, North Carolina, Penn State and Wisconsin (US).  They espouse an international outlook and have demonstrated state-of-the art expertise in management. Most of them have had extensive business experience as consultants, board members or senior executives and are committed to education and providing a stimulating environment in which to carry out a successfully planned and executed DBA research project.

The application process includes:

• Online application form;
• A detailed curriculum vitae;
• Copy of certificates referenced in the curriculum vitae;
• Copy of ID card or passport;
• Two references (one academic and one professional, preferably);
• A text of four pages (Times New Roman, font 11, double space) with two sections: Motivation for applying to the DBA (1 page); description of the area and the theme to be developed in the research project; the objectives, of the research and contribution than can produce (3 pages).

It is recommended the submission of applications as early as possible, since the whole process of evaluation and pre-selection is carried out on a rolling basis.

Please be aware that if you have a non-Portuguese diploma or certificate, you must provide the following information:

• Your diploma or certificate must have the final grade;
• You must present a Transcript of records with all courses, grades per course and the duration of your degree;
• The documents must have the Hague Apostille  or to be recognized by the Portuguese local Consular agency;
• When the documents mentioned above are in a foreign language other than Spanish, French, English or Italian, a  certified translation must be delivered;

The application will not be analyzed if the documents submitted do not meet the above conditions.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for candidates with significant business experience who hold an MBA or a master's degree in Management or a related area. Candidates should be interested in acquiring a research-based, problem-driven qualification that culminates in a doctoral degree and wish to contribute to management as powerful actors in the development of organizations. We are looking for CVs that demonstrate academic excellence, professional management achievements and the desire to be part of our program.

There are also external opportunities for financial support.
