Scientific Dissemination Activities

 

Researchers from the Economics group, Nádia Simões and Nuno Crespo, collaborated with APESPE-RH –the Portuguese Association of Private Sector Enterprises in Employment and Human Resources, to produce a Barometer of Temporary Work in Portugal. In 2018, our researchers prepared monthly reports concerning the evolution of the temporary employment in Portugal, using the data from the main firms of the sector.

 

BRU-IUL researcher, Hélia Pereira, was a keynote speaker during the Data Protection Day at the 28thDigital Business Congress, organised by the Portuguese Association for Communications Development on the 26th and 27th September 2018. She made a presentation on "The impact of the new RGPD in the relations between brands and customers".

 

On July 5th2018, Sílvia Silva from the Organizational Behavior & Human Resources group, participated in the Business Breakfast organised by Great Place to Work Portugal, in partnerhip with SAS Software Institute, on the topic “How to treat my coworkers, how I treat my clients? – Challenges in attracting and retaining talents”(Como tratar os meus colaboradores, como trato os meus clientes? – Os desafios na atração e retenção de talentos). HR managers and other managers from several companies were present including Santander and Teleperformance.

 

From June 30 to July 2 2018, M. Azzim Gulamhussen, researcher from the Finance Group, was involved in the scientific coordination as chair of the International Finance and Banking Society (IFABS) 2018 Porto Conference “Ten Years After the 2008 Financial Crisis: Where Are We Heading Now?”. The IFABS Conferences aim to provide a forum for discussion and critical analysis of the major financial and banking challenges and networking amongst academics, policy-makers, research students and practitioners.

 

On 19thJune 2018, Economics group researcher, Sandro Mendonça, participated in a public debate at Culturgest Auditorium on the Challenges of the European Union, with a presentation on “Innovation, Digital Europe, Employment, Growth and Competitiveness”. This was part of an ongoing conference cycle by bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos in collaboration with the European Institute.

 

On 22nd May 2018, Ana Patrícia Duarte, participated in the debate about "Equity between men and women", talking about what companies are doing to promote gender equity in the scope of their corporate social responsibility policies. This debate was part of a series of informal gatherings organised by ISCTE-IUL, the “Ciclo Tertúlias - A falar é que a gente se entende”, where relevant and current societal topics are discussed bringing academia closer to society.

 

On 28thApril, for the celebrations of the National Day for Prevention and Safety at work, researcher Sílvia Silva, made a communication on “Safety culture: the role of the individual” (Cultura de Segurança: o Papel do Indivíduo) at SIMAR on for the benefit of the company’s workers and managers.

 

In April 2018, researcher Paulo Bento participated in the Visão Fest, the commemoration of the 25thanniversary of the weekly magazine, Visão.    The festivities included concerts, workshops, debates, encounters with artists and authors, etc. Among the debates, Paulo Bento was one of the invited speakers for the short-talk Optimist Portugal (“Portugal Optimista”), together with renowned entrepreneurs and business managers, discussing on the subject of how to achieve an optimist environment in Portugal and how to capitalize on that optimism for the success of enterprises.

 

From December 2017 until March 2018, BRU-IUL researcher Luís Oliveirawas responsible for the technical coordination of the 16thedition of the Investment Game (“Jogo do Investimento”), an outreach activity geared to high school students. This event was a collaboration with software company Ed-Rom. The Investment Gameis a theoretical/practical initiative, allowing participants to: Improve their understanding of capital markets within the context of the functioning of financial markets Follow closely (on a daily basis for about a month) the evolution of the main financial markets Test how to make investments in financial assets Experience the same conditions of professionals in this environment   This 2018 edition of the game gathered about 500 high school students from all over Portugal.

 

On 30-31 January 2018, Ana Simaens participated in the annual conference of the  Forum para a Governação Integrada (GovInt), a think tank of public and private institutions collaborating for the resolution of complex social problems through integrated governance models allowing more effectiveness and efficiency. After being an expert in GovInt’s working group on Leadershipsince 2016, our researcher coordinated the 2018 Conference’s Workshop “GovInt leader: systemic and collaborative”. Additionally, the work carried for the past 2 years in the Leadershipworking group by was materialised in a chapter of the book “Fatores Críticos de Sucesso e Governação Integrada” (Critical Factors of Success and Integrated Governance), which was launched during the conference.

 

On the 25thJanuary 2018, Alexandra Ferreira Lopes from the Economics group, discussed a chapter of the study The Portuguese economy: Short essays on structural changeswith technical staff from the Ministry of Finance, more specifically from the department of Planning, Strategy, Evaluation and International Relations (GPEARI). On this seminar organised by Ministry, she discussed chapter 5 of the aforementioned study, titled “Estimação da produtividade total dos fatores - uma visão crítica”(Estimate of total factor productivity – a critical perspective).

 

The Business Research Unit (BRU-IUL) participated for the third time in the European Researchers' Night with the activity “Desafio de Construção” (“Brick challenge”), hosting this event at the Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência on September 29th in Lisbon.  Participants had the opportunity to understand the group dynamics under adaptive situations, through the process of constructing the objects out of the toy building blocks, similar to LEGO, with the help and explanations from our researchers.   The BRU-IUL researchers António Abrantes and Inês Sousa were the organisers, and BRU-IUL staff was also present to support the activity and to offer the additional information about being a researcher at BRU-IUL.

 

The Business Research Unit participated for the second time in the programme Ciência-Viva no Laboratório- Ocupação Cientifica de Jovens nas Férias. BRU-IUL participated with the activity “Estágio de Investigação sobre Bem-estar, inovação e desempenho no trabalho” (Research internship on Wellbeing, innovation and work performance), which was held from 10thto 14thJuly 2017 at ISCTE-IUL. During this week, the participants were invited to experience all the steps of the research process in organizational behavior. The researcher Sílvia Silva from Organizational Behavior & Human Resources Group at BRU-IUL, was responsible for the activity.

 

The event had more than 4,000 registered participants with about 400 communications by researchers who presented the results of their scientific work, 700 posters of PhD students and dozens of projects demonstrations. This event was organised with the intention to promote a broad debate on the main themes and challenges of scientific work, bringing together researchers, politicians and members of the society in general. The BRU-IUL was represented by two oral presentations of our researchers and two poster presentations of our final year PhD students. Helena Isidro and Daniela Langaro represented BRU-IUL with 2 oral presentations, while PhD students in Management - Marketing, Ricardo Bilro and Helena Rodrigues, presented their research with poster presentations.

 

BRU-IUL researchers, Mónica Meireles (Economics Group) and José Paulo Esperança (Finance Group) participated as guest speakers in the 2017 Research Week ISCTE-IUL, held from 29th May 29 to 2ndJune.

 

Silvia Dello Russo and Susana Tavares researchers from Organizational Behavior & Human Resources Group at BRU-IUL, participated in the Festa do Cinema Italiano, was held on 4^th April 2016, at the cinema São Jorge. (05.04.2016)

The seminar "Não-Respostas nas Sondagens com Telemóveis" took place at ISCTE-IUL on the 26th of February 2015.

In this seminar, the researchers Paula Vicente, Catarina Marques and Elizabeth Reis from BRU-IUL shared with the audience the main results of the FCT funded project entitled “Erro de não-resposta nas sondagens telefónicas com telemóveis: causas, efeitos e correcções”. (27.02.2015)

 

Under the scope of the activities of the Business Research Unit (BRU-IUL) of ISCTE, held on the 27^th of November in Auditorium Afonso de Barros, Ala Autonoma at ISCTE-IUL, the colloquium "Formar e desenvolver competências: Uma oportunidade competitiva no contexto atual?” on the role of training and skills development in the current economic context.

Following this colloquium, the book “Formação e desenvolvimento organizacional: Abordagens e casos práticos” was  launched and presented by Prof. Dr. Rita Campos e Cunha (NovaSBE).

The researchers António Caetano, Silvia Silva, Susana Tavares and Susana Santos of the Organizational Behavior & Human Resources Group at BRU-IUL, organized this book.

The Entrepreneurship Summer University (ESU) took place in ISCTE-IUL, on August 2013.

ESU Conference and Doctoral Programme had the contribution of academics and PhD students from different countries to the discussion of entrepreneurship research.

The conference started with a plenary session under the topic Bridging entrepreneurship research and practice, by Professor António Caetano from Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources Group.

The main findings on entrepreneurship research were discussed, but also the fact that there are still some gaps between research and practice in this research field. Following this, the PhD students participating at the conference were asked to contribute to the challenge of building bridges between research and practice in entrepreneurship. A result is the Entrepreneurship News: a newspaper about their research in a plain language as a way to translate academic work into practical language.
